Welcome

We welcome you to The Giving Tree.  Just like the tree in Shel Silverstein's book, The Giving Tree, we are a living resource. We believe that the development of our youth requires the active involvement of the entire community.  The Giving Tree helps to enhance the overall effectiveness of your learning environment through capacity building.  We invite you to explore our website as we help you on your journey to enhance the lives of our youth through the development of high quality programming and relevant services.

"I used the concepts in Shel Silverstein's book, The Giving Tree, as a personal mission statement for
helping children grow.  Now it is my personal mission statement for helping educators grow."

Bridgett Scarborough, M.Ed.

Co-Founder / Executive Director

Who We Are

The Giving Tree is a community development organization created to promote and support the educational activities of the schools, organizations and churches in your community.  Our mission is: To strengthen the overall learning environment of your community by providing a broad range of holistic and communal approaches intended to improve student performance and youth development.  We believe that all communities can enhance student achievement through relationships with external partners.

To advance our mission The Giving Tree operates under the following core values:

  • All community members as central to student learning.

  • Integration of community awareness into educational programs and services.

  • Celebrating, promoting and rewarding teachers and school administrators as highly skilled professionals.

  • Approaching professional development in a Reflective, Interactive, Socratic and Engaging manner that will enhance the human development of teachers and administrators.

  • Character education programming that will enable students to think critically and take responsibility for themselves, their education, and their communities.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teachers

The Giving Tree has created a quarterly newsletter for our Professional Teacher Members.  Ed Leaf highlights the achievements of schools and others working to enhance the world of education.  It also provides educators with useful classroom strategies.  In Spring '09 we began our professional development series entitled Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teachers beginning with Habit One: Be Proactive.

For educators in early childhood, elementary, high school, and after-school settings; working in schools, organizations, and churches.
